Lassis are an ancient drink originating in the Punjab region (northern India and eastern Pakistan). A lassi is a drink blended with dahl (yogurt), water, spices, and sometimes fruit. It originated around 1000 BC and was said to have Ayurvedic healing properties, calming the stomach and mind.
Lassis were generally enjoyed after a meal to aid digestion. Lassis come in all sorts of flavors: some are savory, some are sweet, some are minty, some are fruity. A mango lassi is basically a mango yogurt-based milkshake or smoothie.
Fruit varieties, such as mango lassis, are especially good for cooling off during hot summer days.
Fresh mango versus frozen mango
You can use canned mango pulp or diced fresh or frozen mango. If using fresh mango, you'll want to use a ripe, sweet mango.
- Preparation/Total time: 5 min.
- Cooking time: 5 min.
- Serves -2.
Ingredients -
- 2 cups of diced mango / mango pulp
- 2 cups of curd/yogurt
- 3 tablespoons of sugar
- ¼ teaspoon cardamom powder/elaichi powder
- some tutti frutti (optional)
- 2 mint leaves (optional)
Instructions -
- First, in a large blender take 2 cups of mango and 2 cups of curd.
- Also add 3 tablespoons of sugar and ¼ teaspoon of cardamom powder.
- Mix gently without adding water.
- Transfer the prepared lassi to a glass jar.
- Finally, garnish with tutti frutti and mint leaves before serving the mango lassi.
