5gm Traditionally, sindoor is applied at the hairline or along the parting line of a woman's hairstyle (also called a maang), or as a dot on the forehead. In Hinduism, sindoor is a mark that distinguishes a married woman. Unmarried women wear the colored dot ("bindi" in Hindi) but do not apply sindoor to their maang. Hindu widows do not wear sindoor, as a sign that their husband has passed away. A version used in Hindu rituals or puja is called kumkum. This is also associated with the name of the wedding ritual in some Hindu communities, where it is called 'Haldi-Kumkum'.
